Hong Wang and Jacob Tsimerman awarded the 2026 Fields Medal

The CRM congratulates all four 2026 Fields Medal laureates: Hong Wang, Jacob Tsimerman, John Pardon, and Yu Deng.

Widely regarded as the highest honour in mathematics, the Fields Medal is awarded every four years to mathematicians under the age of 40 whose work has had a profound impact on the field.

We are particularly proud to announce that the Fields Medal has been awarded to two mathematicians with close ties to the Centre de recherches mathématiques (CRM): Hong Wang, a speaker at the 2025 Nirenberg Lectures at the CRM, and Jacob Tsimerman, recipient of the CRM’s 2017 André-Aisenstadt Prize.

Hong Wang

A professor at New York University and the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques (IHES), Hong Wang is a leading figure in harmonic analysis, geometric measure theory, and Kakeya-type problems. She earned her PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2019 and subsequently held positions at the Institute for Advanced Study, UCLA, and NYU.

Her groundbreaking work culminated in the resolution, with Joshua Zahl, of the three-dimensional Kakeya conjecture, a landmark achievement with far-reaching implications for Fourier analysis, partial differential equations, and geometric measure theory.

The CRM had the privilege of welcoming Hong Wang as the 2025 Nirenberg Lecturer in Geometric Analysis, strengthening the connection between her pioneering research and the Montreal mathematical community.

Jacob Tsimerman

A professor at the University of Toronto, Jacob Tsimerman is internationally recognized for his contributions to number theory, arithmetic geometry, and transcendence theory. Awarded the 2017 André-Aisenstadt Prize by the CRM, he has produced a series of breakthroughs that have reshaped modern arithmetic geometry.

Among his most influential achievements are his decisive contributions to the proof of the André-Oort conjecture for Shimura varieties, as well as major advances in functional transcendence and algebraic geometry. His work is distinguished by its originality and its ability to connect diverse areas of mathematics.
