CRM-Fields-PIMS Prize

The CRM-Fields-PIMS prize is the premier Canadian award for research achievements in the mathematical sciences. It is awarded jointly by the three Canadian mathematics institutes. The winner receives a monetary award and an invitation to present a lecture at each institute within one year after the award is announced.

Call for nominations

The Centre de recherches mathématiques (CRM), the Fields Institute, and the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIMS) invite nominations for the CRM-Fields-PIMS prize, awarded in recognition of exceptional research achievement in the mathematical sciences. The candidate’s research should have been conducted primarily in Canada or in affiliation with a Canadian university.

As part of our commitment to equality, we particularly encourage nominations of women and of members of underrepresented groups.

History and Funding

The prize was established by the Centre de recherches mathématiques and the Fields Institute as the CRM-Fields Prize in 1994. In 2005, PIMS became an equal partner and the name was changed to the CRM-Fields-PIMS Prize. The prize recognizes exceptional achievement in the mathematical sciences.

The CRM-Fields-PIMS Prize consists of an award of $10,000 with no restriction of use, funded equally by the three institutes. The winner is invited to give a lecture at each institute during the semester when the award is announced.

Eligibility, Criteria and Continuity

The winner’s research, which forms the primary basis for the award, should have been conducted mainly in Canada or in affiliation with a Canadian university.

The main selection criterion is outstanding contribution to the advancement of research. The prize recognizes the breadth, depth and international impact of the candidate’s research. The nomination deadline is November 1 of each calendar year. The Selection Committee actively encourages nominations of women and underrepresented groups for this award.

What is expected from the laureate

The institutes expect that each laureate will deliver a lecture at the institute which hosted the award during the semester when the prize is announced. The other two institutes may also extend invitations for the candidate to deliver a lecture at their respective insititutes.

Selection process

The awardee is chosen by a Selection Committee. The decision of the committee is final. The committee is chaired by each of the three institutes in turn. The institute that chairs the Selection Committee is the host of the award for that year. The institute will appoint a person who will act as Chair of the Selection Committee for the year.
