The Centre de recherches mathématiques (CRM) is pleased to announce that Octav Cornea (Université de Montréal, member of the CRM) will deliver the
CRM-PIMS-AARMS Invited Address at the 2026 Joint Mathematics Meetings (JMM) in Washington DC. His talk, entitled Complexity of Lagrangian Submanifolds, will take place on January 4, 2026.
Octav Cornea received his PhD in 1993 from the University of Rochester and has been a Professor at the Université de Montréal since 2003. He works in topology and geometry. He was Research Professor at MSRI (2009), an IAS Fellow (2015-2016), a Simons Fellows (2015-2016), and an invited speaker at the inaugural Mathematical Congress of the Americas (2013). He served as Director of the CRM from 2021 to 2025.
This lecture is part of a long-term partnership agreement between the CRM, the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIMS), the Atlantic Association for Research in Mathematical Sciences (AARMS), and the American Mathematical Society (AMS). Established as of 2024, the agreement provides for the joint organization of a plenary lecture and an associated special session at the Joint Mathematics Meeting, the largest annual mathematics conference in the world.
Through this partnership, the CRM and its partners reaffirm their commitment to promoting research excellence and strengthening the international visibility of the Canadian mathematical sciences community.
