A look back at the roundtable of November 7
On Monday, November 7, the CRM held a roundtable discussion, moderated by CRM Director Octav Cornea, on the state of the mathematical sciences in Quebec. The seven panelists were Alejandro Adem (President, NSERC), Janice Bailey (Scientific Director, FRQNT), Marie-Josée Hébert (Vice-Rector for Research, Université de Montréal), Nathalie de Marcellis-Warin (Director, CIRANO), Yoshua Bengio (Scientific Director, Mila), Morgan Craig (Professor, Université de Montréal) and Andrew Granville (Professor, Université de Montréal).
Three themes were discussed: the growth of mathematics today; the major advances and impact of applications of mathematical sciences; the situation and funding of mathematical research in Quebec. Numerous questions and comments from the audience followed the exchanges between the panelists.
