Henri Darmon 2017 CRM-Fields-PIMS Prize Recipient<\/h1>\n

Professor Henri Darmon of McGill University is the winner of the 2017 CRM-Fields-PIMS Prize. Professor Darmon is one of the leading number theorists of his generation. He has an extraordinary record of deep and highly influential contributions to the arithmetic theory of ellipticcurves, including his recent breakthrough on the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer Conjecture. He has also been an exceptional mentor to students and an exemplary citizen of the mathematical community.<\/p>\n

Prof. Darmon obtained his PhD in Mathematics from Harvard University in 1991. He then held a postdoctoral position at Princeton University and in 1994 he joined the faculty of McGill University, where he has been a James McGill Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics since 2005. His other honours include the Andr\u00e9 Aisenstadt Prize of the CRM (1997), the Coxeter-James Prize of the Canadian Mathematical Society (1998), the Ribenboim Prize of the Canadian Number Theory Association (2002), and the John L. Synge Award of the Royal Society of Canada (2008). He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 2003.<\/p>\n
